Just when the team back here at Visual Narratives started believing that Malaysian cinema could not be at a dimmer state, Neeyum Naanum, the directorial debut of Bala Ganapathi Williams (Rasikka Russika & BGW Studios)'s trailer gets released to the team's big delight.
The movie, heavily banking on the lead characters’ chemistry (BGW and Jasmine Michael) has so far been promoted as a love story.
With the trailer, BGW (who is also producing the feature) smartly shifts the genre by adding in drama to what was initially thought to be a breezy love story.
The trailer, with heavy Gautham Menon flavour (trust us, we're not complaining) starts off rather interestingly with the exchange between BGW and Jasmine Michael, before dwelling into what seems to be an emotional drama between the lead pair.
First things first, the trailer looks like it's been shot with some aesthetic sense, with cinematography clearly looking like a notch above your average Malaysian films.
In a movie industry that is cluttered with movies that does not understand colour grading or shot divisions, Neeyum Naanum comes across as a breath of fresh air.
Now, the question that remains is whether BGW has taken the promise of a good trailer and translated it to a good movie. More importantly, would all the great cinematography be accompanied by a good story? (something that has been Malaysian movies biggest Achilles Heel).
Only time will tell.
Looking forward, with hope.
